When searching for good food, it is always worth broadening your horizons and I often forget how close Manchester really is. In order to sample a venue that boasts the best steaks in the area, we thought it would be worthwhile to take a trip to one of our closest neighbouring cities.

Positioned just off Deansgate amongst some of the best restaurants in Manchester, I had a feeling that Grill on the Alley would be good.

Just to give you an idea of what to expect if you make the journey yourself, The Grill on the Alley is a 2nd floor restaurant with a small bar at the front of the restaurant. The decor is a clever combo of fairly down to earth combined with high end. Expect to be given a warm welcome as it is very evident that the staff are all reading from the same page in order to create an enjoyable experience.

Keen to try a variety of what was on offer, my dining partner and I chose a variety of things on the menu so that we could share a full experience with you.

I opted for an apple and cherry Bellini to begin and my friend, being the designated driver, thought it was best to stick to one beer, which was recommended by our waiter Neil.

All the beers are specialist bottled beers and there is a wide variety to choose from. I never shy away from a cocktail, so I did well to stick to just one drink off the extensive cocktail menu. My designated driver agreed that the lager was a good recommendation.

The menu was wide ranging enough that regardless of what your palette is, it's highly likely there will be something on there that you will enjoy.

We decided to start with a sharing platter which consisted of Thai fishcakes, calamari, duck spring rolls and chicken satay.

If you're anything like us, you may find that it is really easy to overeat at the start of your meal, but we found that this was a perfect size for 2.

My favourite was the calamari, which I usually find is served quite rubbery and with too much batter, but this was cooked to perfection. My friend, who is not usually a fan of duck, added that the duck spring rolls where the best she's had in a long time.

For main courses, my fellow diner chose to have one of the specials. in the form of sea bass on a bed of Mediterranean roasted vegetables. Of course, I had to go for the fillet steak to see what the fuss was about and I added the buttery mash with a bit of ya ma's favourite carrot and swede!

The fillet steak itself was simply divine and I know why they have gathered such an amazing reputation, as it was one of the best I have ever had. I opted for the blue cheese sauce, which was in all honesty was a little rich for me, so I wasn't able to eat much of it.

My dining partner was quick to mop up my left-over sauce with her chips, proving that it is purely down to a matter of taste.

The wine we were served was recommended and complimented the meal perfectly.

One of the things that we noticed was that each of our courses was served piping hot. Personally, I believe that there is nothing worse than being served lukewarm food, so I was really happy about this.

My fellow diner couldn't fault the special, which she had picked out earlier from a tweet that the restaurant had sent in the morning.

The vegetables included leeks, which was interesting and unusual and a really nice touch. We had started to feel the weight of the portion sizes, but there was no way we were going to be defeated, so we promptly ordered a chocolate fudge cake with two spoons.

Wobbling out of the restaurant, I was glad that I had added the Irish coffee at the end because the shot of coffee was much needed to keep me awake for the journey home!
