Spinfest A Success

Jonathan Schofield was worried but it all turned out better than all right

Spinfest A Success

I WAS worried.

I was thinking this will feel wrong. A corporate event in a corporate area with a desperate atmosphere of trying to please.

Spinningfields has come of age in the last year or two.

But sat there at half three on a Bank Holiday Monday Spinfest was just fine. There was a laid-back atmosphere, good food, good beer and good company.

Best of all was the audience which had all age groups and all sorts just having a good time. That's how it should be in the city centre, something for everyone. A mercy was that the live music from the various acts was never too loud. People could chat or listen as they chose.

The new performance area with it's nifty canopy outside the Oast House proved perfect for a smaller festival as well.

The theme this time was 'an American Vintage-inspired' celebration and involved easy-listening from across the pond with 'jazz, swing, jive, and pop'. There were kids activities too, a hog roast, and classic cars drawn up to view nearby.

Coming up in a month is a Best of British Jubilee celebration on 3 and 4 June, and a Beer and Blues festival on 26 and 27 August. Sounds good.

It's hard to invent a new quarter in any city but we have one here. It might involve big buildings in concrete, steel and glass, but, as I know, from being a tour guide and taking around lots of overseas, British and local guests, everyone thinks it's an asset.

Spinfest cements Spinningfields place in the city.

But then again, with that laid-back atmosphere, good food, good beer and good company Spinfest couldn't fail.

The pictures here were taken on the Sunday of the event by Kelly Ormesher.
