2012 M.E.N. Business of the Year shortlist announced
Companies involved in sectors from retailing, leisure and technology to engineering and recruitment will battle it out in the 2012 MEN Business of the Year awards.
Five previous winners are among the 20 firms shortlisted for accolades at a gala awards dinner at Manchester Town Hall on Wednesday, November 7.
Broadcaster Nicky Campbell will host the awards, which are sponsored by PwC, law firm Pinsent Masons and The Co-operative Bank.
MEN business editor Kevin Feddy said: "This year's competition has seen an immensely high standard of entries and all 20 companies can be proud of being short-listed."
The list of finalists is as follows:
Turnover more than £100m
Scapa Group, a tapes and adhesives manufacturer based in Ashton under Lyne;
NES Global Talent, based in Altrincham, which supplies technical and engineering staff to the oil, gas, power, rail and pharmaceutical sectors;
De Poel, based in Knutsford, which supplies temporary workers to large employers such as Asda, Sainsbury's, Bupa, British Gas and Warburtons.
Entertainment Magpie, based in Macclesfield, which sells used CDs, DVDs and computer games;
Oliver Valves, an engineering group which has its HQ in Knutsford;
NCC Group, the Manchester-based IT security giant;
The Fragrance Shop, based at Trafford Park, which sells perfumes, aftershaves and eau de toilettes from more than 130 shops.
Entertainment Magpie, Oliver Valves and NCC Group all previously triumphed in the £25m-£50m category and their growth means they have now moved up.
ANS Group, a Manchester-based technology business which was a winner in the £10m-£25m category in 2009;
The Authentic Food Company, a frozen food manufacturer in Manchester;
Living Ventures, the Knutsford-based bar and restaurant chain;
Better Bathrooms, an independent bathrooms and tiles retailer which has its HQ in Warrington.
Trendsetter Home Furnishings, of Trafford Park, a bedding manufacturer and a winner in 2003 in the £10m-£50m category;
Amoria Bond, a recruitment business based in Didsbury;
Mobica, a Wilmslow-headquartered software developer.
Turnover under 10m
Metronet (UK), a Manchester-based internet service provider;
UK Point of Sale Group, of Stockport, which supplies promotional leaflet, sign and poster holders;
Web Applications UK, a travel industry software specialist based in Oldham.
Young Business of The Year
Space Invader Design, a Manchester interior design studio;
One iota, a mobile retail technology business based in Rossendale;
4D Creative, a Manchester firm which provides sensory lighting and sound to transform classrooms.
