Afternoon Tea at Manchester House
All eyes have been on Aiden Byrne following the riveting Restaurant Wars TV programme about the "rivalry" between Manchester House and Simon Rogan at the Midland Hotel.
Gastronomy doesn't get tougher than this as Masterchef stalwart Gregg Wallace might say but there are some of us who like to reserve Michelin-styled tasting menus for very special occasions and yet would still like to enjoy the ambience of one of the city's most talked about venues. Now it's all possible as Manchester House has introduced an afternoon tea in its lounge area on the 12th floor.
Advantages include amazing views over Manchester and the best alfresco areas ever - surely this is one of the great places to enjoy an afternoon of indulgence in the sunshine!
We kicked off with magnificent cocktails - I absolutely love their Porn Star Martini which is a mix of passion fruits and vodka with a shot glass hit of champagne that probably shouldn't be part of afternoon tea at all but is too tempting to resist.
As you might expect, there isn't a paper doily in sight here. Everything is displayed in a contemporary style but lovers of delicate sandwiches, cakes, pastries and little extras will not be disappointed.
Afternoon tea is all about indulgence and few could be disappointed by smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwiched between crisp bagels, , a selection of deliciously moreish Macaroons and sticky Eccles cakes and Manchester House's take on a lemon meringue alongside the de rigueur scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam and wafer thin sandwiches.
The whole "event" costs £25 with a choice of elegantly served tea or coffee (or £35 with a glass of champagne) but it is a decadent way to spend some time with a friend or beloved and we will definitely be booking our place on the 12th floor on a regular basis!

When you approach Tower 12 in Spinningfields Manchester, it looks like a very normal city tower, don’t be fooled. Inside lies a very special experience for both food lovers and lovers of a life with a view. Two stunning independently different environments. The Lounge on level 12 and the Restaurant by Aiden Byrne on level 2.
