Manchester food and drink power list - 50 top players revealed at Northern Restaurant and Bar Show

Some of Manchester's top chefs and restaurateurs have been named among the top 50 power players in the northern food and drink industry.

The annual list of the most influential people in hospitality is chosen by organisers of the Northern Bar and Restaurant show taking place at Manchester Central today.

Those honoured at an awards lunch at the event this afternoon include Living Ventures bosses Tim Bacon and Jeremy Roberts, whose bar and restaurant empire includes Manchester House and Australasia; San Carlo Group's Carlo and Marcello Distefano; and Damson Group's Steve Pilling and Simon Stanley.

Celebrity chefs Simon Rimmer, who owns Earle in Hale and Green's in Didsbury; and Andrew Nutter, of Nutter's in Rochdale, have held on to their places after being new entries last year.

Simon Rogan, who runs The French and Mr Cooper's House and Garden at Manchester's Midland Hotel also made the list again alongside Almost Famous bosses Beau Myers and Marie Carter; Neighbourhood and Southern 11 directors James Hitchen and Karina Jadhav; and Red's True BBQ co-owners James Douglas and Scott Munro.

Newcomers this year include Tomas Maunier and Robert Melman, directors of Spinningfields rodizio restaurant Fazenda, which opened last year, and Sax and Haz Arshad, directors of Rusholme and Knutsford curry restaurants Mughli.

Three special achievement awards were presented at the event this afternoon to William Lees Jones, managing director of Manchester brewery JW Lees; Nigel Haworth and Craig Bancroft, co-owners of Michelin-starred Northcote in the Ribble Valley; and Jonathan Slater, the retiring boss of the Chester Grosvenor.

NRB director Thom Hetherington said: "We received a record number of entrants to the NRB Top 50 this year, making judging an incredibly difficult process.

"The north seems to be flavour of the month amongst national and international operators at the moment, but we feel it is fundamentally important that we recognise those home-grown operators who are achieving huge levels of critical acclaim and commercial success and driving employment, training and investment in the region. Not least amongst those are our three special award winners."

Around 90 per cent of the top 50 figures are planning more launches and expansion in the region according to show organisers, who revealed last week that Manchester is outstripping London for new restaurant openings.

Included in the NRB Top 50 power list are:

Tim Bacon, CEO, and Jeremy Roberts, director, Living Ventures

Sue Crimes, CEO, Gusto
