The Hero & Icon winners all picked up their Awards at a Gala Dinner following this year's Peach 2020 Conference at the London Film Museum on the South Bank on Thursday (21 November), in the company of 250 specially invited leaders of the industry.
The winning companies cover the full spectrum of casual dining and recognize some of the fastest growing and strongest performing operators of 2013. The individual Icon and Special Awards meanwhile acknowledge the exceptional contributions to the sector made by Karen Forrester of TGI Friday's, Tim Bacon of Living Ventures and entrepreneur and investor Luke Johnson over long and illustrious careers.
Event organizer and CGA Peach director Christine Martin said: "CGA Peach is thrilled to honour these 16 outstanding operators and individuals. We salute all their achievements and congratulate them on their success. What they have in common is a commitment to excellence, a thirst for innovation and a vibrant ambition to get better and better. They demonstrate the vibrancy and energy of the eating and drinking out market, even amid challenging economic conditions, and are beacons to follow. We can all be inspired by our Hero & Icon Award winners and their fellow shortlisted companies and individuals."
CGA Peach director Peter Martin said of the special award winner: "Luke Johnson is simply this sector's most consistent and enthusiastic investor and supporter-our cheerleader, our champion." Industry icon and one-time colleague Ian Neill added: "When 20 years ago Luke reversed PizzaExpress into Star Computers he redefined the quoted restaurant sector. Since then he has repeatedly shown his commitment to leisure through his many investments and I am delighted that he is receiving the recognition he deserves."
Martin said of Karen Forrester: "Karen has transformed TGI Fridays in the UK and now is influencing the way the brand is being developed around the globe. Karen, now as a member of Carlson Restaurants global management team, has become a woman of international influence-and a fantastic ambassador and advertisement for the UK restaurant sector. Karen Forrester not only walks the walk, but talks the talk."
He said of Bacon: "Tim is determined, creative, charming-and one of the most innovative and ambitious operators to be found anywhere. He has the instinctive knack of understanding people and markets and the flair and skill to conjure up great individual concepts. Individuality is perhaps his key strength-along with an appetite for trying something new, exciting and fun."
The 13 Hero Awards were selected from shortlists recognizing some 40 different operators. Eight of the Awards-for Newcomer, Breakthrough Brand, Evolutionary Brand, Best Destination Opening, Brand Extension, Technology Innovation, Most Admired Brand and Industry Leader-are Industry Hero Awards, and were voted for by a select panel of 100 industry leaders. Five Awards-Consumer Choice, Value Big Brand, Quality Big Brand, Coolest Big Brand and Power Brand-are Consumer Hero Awards, and were derived from Peach's authoritative BrandTrack sample of 5,000 consumers across the UK over the course of 2013, with the last of them also influenced by industry votes. The Icon Awardsand Special Award required no shortlists and were selected with the help of previous winners.
CGA Peach thanks the headline sponsors of the Hero & Icon Awards and 2020 Conference: Coffer Corporate Leisure, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Enotria, Fourth, Livebookings, Omnico, RBS and Travers Smith.
