Planners Toast The Grand Restaurant Scheme

Hortons' Estate's proposals to add restaurant and bar units to the lower floors of Colmore Row's The Grand are set for approval from city council planners, new documents have revealed.

It comes weeks after Living Ventures, the company behind The Botanist, agreed to lease space at the site for two new venues.

Hortons' Estate lodged the application to create 21,684 sq ft of restaurant, bar and additional office space at The Grand in October 2015.

The family-owned business has pumped £14m into revamping the grade II-listed building since 2012, including restoring its facades and installing a new roof.

The latest set of plans will create 1,442 sq ft of retail and 2,712 sq ft of restaurant space at basement level, 2,723 sq ft of restaurant space at the lower ground floor, restaurant and bar units totalling 13,107 sq ft on the ground floor and a further 1,636 sq ft of offices on the second floor.

In January, it was revealed that Living Ventures, the company behind bar and restaurant The Botanist on Temple Street, had leased three units at The Grand. It will transform the space into a new branch of its Italian restaurant Gusto and cocktail bar The Alchemist.

In documents filed ahead of a Birmingham City Council planning committee meeting next week (3 March 2016) officers said the application "represents a good balance between restoring the building to its former glory against the requirements of a viable mixed-use development".

In was recommended for approval subject to a number of conditions.

The Grand stopped operating as a hotel in 2002 and the retail and office element of the site closed in December 2014.

Earlier this month Hortons' Estate unveiled 10,000 sq ft of grade A office space at the building. It has invested more than £1.5m in creating the suites, which range from 183 sq ft to 2,874 sq ft.

The space is being marketed by the Birmingham offices of Johnson Fellows and Lambert Smith Hampton.
